Requirement to Test
Vision testing in the work place can be a requirement for a number of reasons and it enables employers to comply with relevant health and safety regulations. Our services at abc are designed to sign post those who are showing some signs of visual impairment during screening programs and we would always refer to an optician for a fully detailed vision check and examination of the health of the eye.
Under the Health and Safety DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 employers have a duty to assess workers and offer or provide on request a full vision test by a qualified ophthalmologist and most companies make provision with a local optician to provide this service.
When conducting FLT medicals or fit for work assessments for jobs such as visual inspection, wiring etc a basic eye test will be conducted for visual aquity, peripheral vision and employees may be assessed for colour vision where this is crucial to the job role.
ABC conduct basic tests for visual aquity using the standard Snellen chart, also peripheral vision may be assessed. Where colour identification can be a crucial job role then a colour vision test may be conducted using an Ishihara test plate. On occasions and if available a key stone vison machine may be used
The questionnaire should be completed by the employee and returned to Occupational Health and should be very quick to complete. A basic vision test will normally be conducted within 15/ 20 minutes.
Vision Testing would help employers and employees to comply with their statutory requirements as laid down by the HSE and in particular regard to the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations with regard to specific roles and in particular the DSE (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992
As part of the test process the Health Practitioner will gather personal medical information which is kept confidential. All such records will be kept off site with the OH provider or if a suitably locked filing system is provided on site to which only the OH Provider has sole access then this enables us to keep records with the employer. An Employee may consent to records being viewed or kept by the employer or being disclosed to a third party.
A summary of the employee’s results along with the required fit to work sign off where applicable, will be made available along with details of any further referrals advised and any information to enable the management of any health or safety related matters or details of any further action the employer needs to take.
